A SONIC CARTOGRAPHY OF MEXICO
KONTRA
MARIACHI
The memory of a land.
Alive in sound.
Four centuries of Mexican music brought into an intimate, contemporary encounter.

THE MUSICAL WORLD
A homeland,
heard anew.
Created by countertenor and composer Santiago Cumplido, Kontramariachi brings together the polyphony of colonial Mexico, living folk traditions and the romantic songs that became part of a collective memory.
Violas da gamba, theorbo, harps and jaranas meet contrapuntal voices. Familiar melodies acquire unexpected colours; forgotten musical treasures return to the present through new arrangements, bodies and breath.
Its name joins the countertenor’s voice with the mariachi traditions of Jalisco. A personal journey back to the music of home, shaped through research, travel and the pleasure of making music together.
